The Anatomy and Physiology Club, in collaboration with pre-health fraternity Delta Epsilon Mu, virtually hosted guest lecturer Liz Salyers for a clinic on stroke science and medicine.
Salyers (BSN, RN, CEN, SCRN) is the Acute Stroke Ready Coordinator for the TriHealth Hospital Network. She developed the emergency department stroke committee, which assisted in educating team members in the department and preparing for The Joint Commissions Primary Stroke Center Certification. She also assisted Bethesda Butler ED and Arrow Springs ED in preparing and obtaining the Acute Stroke Ready Certification and re-certification through The Joint Commission.
Salyers discussed the anatomy and physiology behind hemorrhagic, ischemic, and atherosclerosis-induced strokes. She presented different symptoms and tests used to identify strokes and explained the difference in these methods for classifying anterior versus posterior episodes.
Salyers walked students through three case studies involving different types of stroke. She presented recorded 911 calls, medic reports, and the procedure of events using time-stamped information in order to illustrate the approach to treating a stroke patient from the perspective of a medical professional.
The APC and DEM would like to thank Salyers for taking the time to educate our members and for sharing her experiences with us. Your presentation was incredibly fascinating and engaging, and we look forward to working with you again in the future!
The APC has plenty of clinics and workshops lined up with more phenomenal guests this semester. View our Events page for more information!
