APC Focuses on Fractures

Anatomy and Physiology Club members had the opportunity to learn more about bone fractures and ways they can be repaired at our Sports Medicine and Fractures workshop. The workshop focused on common injuries seen in the world of sports, with a focus on fractures.

APC Education Chairs Nikki Prokos (pictured above), Ryan Talcoff and Adam Grieshop presented information on different types of sports injuries, bone fractures and mechanisms of injury, providing background information on pertinent bone anatomy.

Different fracture repairing techniques were introduced as well and included open and closed fracture reduction and internal and external fracture fixation methods. Members were able to practice internally fixing a fracture on kits provided during the workshop.

Synthetic limbs were used to illustrate internal fractures. Members were able to feel what a an oblique displaced fracture would be like in a long bone. Using surgical techniques to expose the bone within the limb, the fracture could also be seen.

Members were tasked with setting the bone, placing the trans-osseous plate, and drilling in screws to stabilize the fracture for proper healing.

Through splinting the bone, members were able to practice casting techniques to further stabilize the limb.

Clinics, workshops and skill labs are great ways for members to gain exposure to procedures performed by health professionals. Keep your eyes on the Event page of our website to see when the next one is; Signing up is highly recommended as they are all valuable and rewarding experiences.
